Day 2 of Chiefs training camp was a fully day of practice that, despite not having pads on, saw the offense begin to install more of the playbook and the defense get the better of the offense on more than one occasion. After a stellar start to camp yesterday, Patrick Mahomes struggled a little bit at times this morning. He threw his first pick of camp during the 2-minute drill and almost threw a second one a little bit later. He also had trouble connecting with Kelce and Watkins on passes that he was hitting yesterday. That being said, he still made a couple highlight reel throws, including a deep ball to Tyreek Hill that scored a touchdown in team drills. All in all it was a pretty solid day for the Chiefs on the field. A couple of standout plays today:
- Mahomes threw a bomb down the left sideline that Tyreek Hill was able to run under and make a stop adjustment to beat the coverage and haul it in for a TD. It was the first time Hill and Mahomes had really hooked up in camp and it looked great. After practice, we had a chance to catch up with Tyreek Hill and he was asked if he’d ever had a quarterback who could hit him in stride when he was at full speed, to which he responded “Nah, I still don’t think Pat can hit me in stride” which got a good laugh from everyone. He would later admit that Mahomes is the closest he’s ever had to having someone who could hit him in stride.
- Former K-State Wildcats standout, undrafted free agent, Byron Pringle made a nice leaping sideline catch during 7 on 7 today that turned some heads.
- David Amerson came away with the interception off of Mahomes today in the 2 minute drill. Mahomes didn’t see him coming underneath the route and it was a fairly easy play but a standout nonetheless.
- Kareem Hunt was held out of most of practice today, just a precautionary measure due to a hamstring issue he had last month at OTAs.
Tomorrow is the first day in full pads. Lots of hitting and lots of excitement brewing. I won’t be back up at camp until Sunday due to Sports Saturday tomorrow. Until Sunday. Let’s go Chiefs!
